What is Rick Simpson Oil (RSO)?

Rick Simpson Oil, in short RSO, is the most popular and versatile cannabis concentrate product. The oil is a creation in the early 2000s by Rick Simpson, a Canadian engineer and marijuana enthusiast.

Simpson first used medical cannabis in 1997 to help him relax and sleep when he suffered Post-Concussion Syndrome resulting from a head injury due to a work-related accident. Later in life, Simpson was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, in 2003.

He carried his research further on the use of cannabis in the treatment of cancer by applying his creation directly to the affected area. He claims RSO worked within four days to kill the cancerous cells. However, there are not many studies to show the effectiveness of cannabis in the treatment of cancerous growths.

RSO oil is unique in its name, history, and uses. So, let’s take a deeper look at what RSO is, how to make it, its uses, and more.

What Is RSO?

Rick Simpson Oil (RSO)is a full-spectrum viscous cannabis oil that is either dark brown or black. RSO is produced by extracting the cannabis compound from the plant material using solvents. RSO is rich in cannabinoids and other cannabis compounds like terpenes making it a powerhouse in the alternative medicine field.

The cannabis extract, which carries the name of its inventor RSO, is intended for topical or oral ingestion. It is very potent, even in small dosage quantities. Mainly, RSO is packaged in a syringe containing up to 30 or 40 doses in 0.5ml.

RSO oil production uses strong Indica strains that exhibit therapeutic effects. The oil’s primary cannabinoid THC is known to have euphoric effects, but the cannabinoid also shows beneficial effects in relieving pain and is a relaxant.

What Is RSO?

What is Cannabis Oil?

Cannabis oil is an umbrella term used with many weed extracts. Originally cannabis oil, specifically CBD oils, is made from hemp for use in the medical field with higher CBD levels and less than 0.5% THC. The original cannabis oil can’t make you high.

Currently, cannabis oil is a cap worn by different cannabis extracts. With the advancement of extraction methods and ease of spreading information, some manufacturers now use Indica and Sativa strains to make cannabis oil. Both have the THC component that makes you high. We recommend only buying cannabis oil from licensed dispensaries where you can get full information about the product.

What is the Difference Between Regular Weed Oil and Rick Simpson Oil?

Rick Simpson Oil and regular weed oil are similar in that both are full-spectrum. They both contain the various chemical compounds found in weed, including THC, which is psychoactive. However, weed oil differs from RSO in the following ways.

RSO has higher levels of THC than regular weed oil, and the high THC concentration in RSO makes RSO more potent than most regular weed oils.

Regular weed oil usually refers to oils infused with weed. The main oils you can infuse with cannabis are Coconut, Olive, or MCT. Conversely, RSO is an oil-like concentrate obtained by separating cannabinoids from the rest of marijuana plant matter – a pure weed product with no infusion. Therefore, RSO is closely related to other cannabis concentrates like hash and hash oil.

How is RSO Made?

Rick Simpson has made his recipe public and is no longer the sole producer of RSO. Making RSO involves the extraction of cannabinoids from the marijuana plant using alcohol as a solvent. The alcohol is then removed from the mixture to produce oil. The procedure involves risks, and you should only use the appropriate apparatus since alcohol is highly flammable.

Here is how RSO is made step by step:

  1. Place the harvested cannabis in a large container, add alcohol to cover the plant matter, and start stirring immediately.
  2. After stirring, strain the content over a coffee filter or cheesecloth into a second container. Ensure your sieve doesn’t allow any plant matter to pass through.
  3. Add some more alcohol to the plant matter and continue stirring.
  4. Strain the second batch and discard the residual plant waste.
  5. The last step involves cooking the mixture liquid to evaporate the alcohol. We recommend you use a rice cooker. It should be done in a well-ventilated room and away from any naked fire since the resultant fumes are highly flammable.
  6. After removing the solvent, you will remain with a dark oily residue, the RSO, which you can pack in syringes for end users.

How to Take Rick Simpson Oil?

How to Take Rick Simpson Oil?

RSO oil is versatile in how you can take it. Some of the ways you can administer your dosage include:

  • Direct Ingestion: RSO can be consumed directly by placing controlled drops from the syringe under the tongue or informing of a capsule. Capsules are the best for novice users because they have exact doses.
  • Topical Application: You can apply RSO directly on the skin where you are experiencing pain, an ideal way to ease chronic pain due to arthritis.
  • Making Edibles: Use RSO when making your favourite cannabis edibles. You can mix the oil in oil foods like avocados, peanut butter, or yogurt. You can also use RSO when baking cakes or brownies. The oil is good when making broths, sauces, and salad dressing.
  • Spiking Hot Beverages: Frozen single doses can be added to coffee or tea or used when cooking just like you use cannabutter.
  • Smoking: Not all types of RSO are smokable; most are made using flammable solvents and possibly have traces of the solvents in the product. So, consult your dispensary for oil extracted using other methods ideal for smoking or vaping.

Edibles are the best at masking RSO flavour, and they help increase the absorption rate. However, edibles take longer to kick in and wear off, so start slow and go slow.
