It’s always great to learn new things in life, especially when it concerns cannabis. The desire to enjoy its therapeutic and euphoric properties has led everyday people to take on a whole new branch of homemade science.

With just the right tools and the time to put research into practice, any cannabis lover can create his or her concentrate, distillate, THC vape oil, and more. The task might seem daunting at first, but when you follow through the process, it’s as easy as creating brownies.

Now, imagine having the knowledge to make your own full spectrum vape oil whenever you need it. It sounds like an economical choice to make in these trying times, right?

If you’re a vaper with the patience to learn the process of making THC vape oil or if you’re just an ordinary passerby with a penchant for guerrilla scientific methods, then this article’s for you!

Pack your rosin bag

The first step on how to make THC vape oil is to extract the rosin from your flower. Prepare by filling a 90 micron rosin bag with about 5g of material. When packing the bag, it’s recommended to use the rosin bottle technique.

Rosin bottle technique

Fold the two edges of the bag inward until you create a triangle-looking shape. This fold will create a compact cylinder that works best during the pressing process. It will also give you higher yields and reduce the chance of having a bag blowout.

When packing, make sure to remove any stems and never overpack. Blowouts often happen due to overpacking rosin bags, so make sure to properly gauge how much it can handle.

Pre-pressing

To help you compress the amount of weed inside the bag, use a metal cylinder to do a pre-press. When pre-pressing, hold the edges of the bag to prevent any weed from escaping. Afterward, you can trim the excess space found at the top of the bag.

Press the cannabis

Once you’ve properly packed the bag, place it between the two plates of a rosin press, and set the temperature at 190°F. A best practice when pressing flowers is to do it slowly to allow more time for the bag to heat up which can increase in yield.

Collect the rosin

After fully pressing the flower, gather the rosin. Roll or mold it for easier transition into a glass jar or vial. Immediately cover your chosen container to prevent any precious terpenes from escaping. As long as the container’s sealed, you can keep pressing and collecting rosin from multiple batches. Only open it to add more rosin inside to preserve its freshness.

Heat up the container

If you think you now have enough rosin in your container, proceed to place it onto a hot plate and set the temperature to about 35°C. On top of this, you can choose to use a torch to heat up the exterior of the container to bring down the solid rosin down to the bottom. When torching, be careful not to apply too much heat to prevent the rosin from burning or glass containers from cracking.

Next, partially decarb the rosin by raising the temperature to 240°F. If you see any gaps inside, it just means that terpenes are creating gas barriers which pushes the rosin up. Close the gaps by removing the container from the hot plate and torching the exterior again to melt the rosin down.

Place the rosin back onto the hot plate and set the temperature down to 130°F. Any bubbling found in your rosin means that it’s successfully decarbing and terpenes are escaping so make sure to keep the container sealed and airtight.

Let the rosin settle for a bit before heating it up again to about 140°F. Leave your rosin on the hot plate for 24 hours at this temperature. Placing a metal canister over the container can also ensure even distribution of heat.

Cool down the rosin

After 24 hours, the rosin will look quite runny and no longer bubbling. Let it sit and cool down for another 24 hours which will result in a more solid and shatter-like consistency. Open the lid once it has cooled down. When doing this you might hear a pop caused by escaping terpenes.

Add the distillate

Add 3 grams of distillate into the container. If you have a magnetic hot plate, add a magnetic stir bar to easily mix the ingredients inside. Seal the container and place it on the hot plate with a temperature of 140°F. The stir bar will then conveniently mix the rosin and distillate, allowing you to lower the heat and prevent the distillate from burning.

Collect your THC vape oil

Once the distillate and rosin are fully mixed, use a syringe to collect the mixture. Get your vape cart and start filling it in from the bottom to prevent any gaps from forming. Once you’ve filled in the entire cart, you can start vaping!

Collect the remaining rosin distillate

Don’t throw away that container just yet! If there’s remaining mixture or residue inside, it can still be salvaged. Just flip your original container and add a shallow container directly below its mouth. Use the torch again to melt the mixture down to the shallow container.

It will still have the same consistency as the vape oil so you can keep this for future purposes.
