While cannabis companies are looking to make a boom this year after legalization providing medical and recreational marijuana to people, some companies will be focused on cannabis for pets.
Marijuana for pets still remains a pretty taboo medicine for veterinarians.
According to Doug Kramer, a veterinarian from California, he says that pot can provide a benefit to pets provided the pet can be screened properly for the use of medical marijuana.
Kramer has treated his own dog fight pain after it got cancer with cannabis tinctures. Doug stated “I do think there are therapeautic benefits to it”.
The Cannabis plant has over 60 known chemicals known as cannabinoids. Two of the main types are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).
CBD is the known property in cannabis which provides the therapeautic effects while THC is what gets you high.
Humans and mammals such as cats and dogs have specific cannabinoid receptor sites in the body which are primarily located in the brain and central nervous system which make up what’s called the endocannabinoid system.
Studies have shown that CBD has many benefits to both humans and pets including anti-inflammatory effects and can help with other ailments such as skin conditions, pain, tumors, appetite stimulation, anxiety and other neurological disorders.
Cannabis medications for pets are low THC and won’t get your pet high which makes it safe to use.
Unlike conventional medicine which have side effects, CBD will just make your dog drowsy. In rare instances pets have had some skin itchiness and vomiting by which case it’s recommended to stop giving them cannabis.
There are several available methods of providing cannabis for pets including tinctures, oils and edibles such as dog treats.
