Doug Ford is currently leading the race for premier of Ontario and gaining favourability with the idea of allowing cannabis to be sold by the open market rather than a government monopoly proposed by the Wynne government.

“I don’t believe in the government sticking their hands in our lives all the time. I believe in letting the market dictate” he told CBC radio.

Doug Ford is no stranger to the world of cannabis. Having allegedly sold marijuana in his youth with his late brother and former Toronto mayor Rob Ford in the city of Toronto.

The liberal government was looking to make the LCBO the sole retailers of cannabis in Ontario much like their monopoly on alcohol despite few exceptions given to major chains.

Doug is looking to make a fair and open market that will allow cannabis to not just be limited to government run locations but to private dispesaries and social outlets such as pool halls.

Allowing the privatization of cannabis rather than a government monopoly would allow for more competition, allow more products to enter the market and provide consumers more options to choose from.

The current model with alcohol is dominated by big players. By looking at wine in Ontario smaller wineries aren’t typically found in stores and often times bought out by bigger wineries typically found in LCBO stores.

I believe opening up the market for cannabis in Ontario would create healthy competition and allow the smaller guys to have a chance in addition to potentially creating offshoot businesses such as weed cafes in addition to being limited to government run shops with confined operating hours.

“Kathleen Wynne and Toronto Mayer John Tory are trying to build a monopoly for their Liberal cronies, but dispensaries are legal, just not regulated” – Rob Ford

The Liberals’ are planning to open 40 cannabis shops in 80 pot shops in 2019 while there is currently 80 illegal pot shops right now. The Liberal government is looking to cut out illegal dispensaries much like we’ve seen them through the last including the well known Cannabis Culture dispensary.

An open market would a progressive idea brought out by the Progressive Conservative party led by Doug Ford who is currently leading according to forum poll held Sunday.

Elections will be held on June 7, 2018 and this may add more favourability to his current ratings and definitely a point to sway voters in his favour.
