Anti-marijuana PSA’s have been around for decades. I remember seeing them in the 80’s while between watching GI Joe and Thundercats. I have to admit they worked as I saw pot as a life ruining drug until I was finally exposed to pot in highschool.
Society has certainly changed its perspective on cannabis as we’re finally nearing legalization in Canada and we’re still learning about the several benefits it provides in treating diseases and disorders.
The ads shown exaggerate the effects of marijuana such as hallucination, deflating or spontaneously combusting.
Many of these ads have become popular memes and satirized on shows such as the Chapelle Show, Family Guy and College Humour.
Enjoy!
Marijuana PSA from the 1960’s
This awkward party looks like it definitely needed some weed and Elvis tunes rather than that soundtrack from Psycho.
Anti Marijuana PSA – Drive Thru
This PSA became a parody on the Chapelle Show.
While this ad ended with a bummer, I feel “do you know where your kids are” should be the real message. A parodied version can be seen below.
Dave Chapelle version:
Anti-Marijuana Ad Campagin – Stoner Sloth
This bizarre campaign was aired in Australia. Someone needs to hand these sloths sativa instead.
Flat Anti-Pot Ad
In this PSA a girl is seen talking about how her friend has become deflated and unresponsive after taking up pot smoking. I’m still trying to figure out which is funnier, the original ad or the parodies.
This ad was parodied on Family Guy seen below:
Anti Weed Commercial. Talking Dog. Original
This anti-marijuana ad which shows a girl hallucinating that her dog is talking to her about the negative impact of smoking marijuana.
The following two parodies of the talking dog anti-pot ad are well worth the watch.
This version was created by College Humour and features Aubrey Plaza who’s a well known actress from the hit show Parks and Recreation and other funny movies.
Surgeon – 80’s Anti-Marijuana PSA
The commercial below shows a surgeon about to perform routine surgery while smoking a joint. I think the fact that he’s smoking a joint is less of a concern than the fact that he might be a psychopath. This is a pretty unrealistic scenario as I’m pretty sure smoking weed during surgery is frowned upon in the medical community.
